One Measure of Problem Solving Ability
I believe that a good measure of problem solving ability is the maximum complexity of a problem that one can solve without needing to subdivide it. In practice it is usually desirable to do so, but there are instances, such as when attempting to understand complicated natural phenomena, where this isn't an option. It is also sometimes possible to realize efficiency gains by considering an entire system.
